ENROLMENTS OPEN FOR 2026

Alternative Education For Year 10 and above

Who We Are

At the Y we believe in the power of inspired young people and the vision of the Y is to build a better world with and for young people.

The Y Community School is established to respond to the needs of young people who are disengaged or at significant risk of disengaging from mainstream education.

We recognise the importance of providing the right learning environment to improve social, educational and employment outcomes for young people, in particular, those who have experienced challenges effectively engaging in education or training.

Our Programs

Built on the pillars of wellbeing, academic growth, and vocational opportunity, the Y program is founded on evidence, experience, and insights from our network of Y vocational schools nationwide.

With a student-led learning approach, we embody our belief in the potential of inspired young people. By offering a safe, supportive environment, we empower students to actively engage in education, gain valuable skills and qualifications, and not only survive but truly thrive — becoming both inspired and an inspiration to others.

Our Wellbeing Approach

At Y Community School, wellbeing is at the centre of everything we do. We know that young people learn best when they feel safe, supported, connected and valued. Our approach recognises that wellbeing and learning go hand in hand, supporting students to engage in education, build confidence and develop skills for life.

Guided by the Y’s core values of Caring, Respect, Honesty and Responsibility, our wellbeing practices are inclusive, trauma-aware and responsive to the individual needs of each young person.

Our School Philosophy

All young people want to learn and do well, and should have the right to achieve their full potential regardless of circumstances and the barriers that have prevented them from engaging fully in education. The development of the whole person is of utmost importance. We are guided in developing this through the Y’s philosophy of valuing a person’s body, mind and spirit. We believe this holistic approach is best delivered through a flexible, individualised learning program and environment to maximise positive outcomes for every student.

We strive to deliver a high-quality educational program focused on the whole person and on supporting individualised education in the academic, wellbeing and vocational domains. Our approach is to re-engage students through specially tailored programs, curriculum and structures focused on supporting students to progress to employment and/or further education and training.

Y Community School supports and promotes the principles and practices of our Australian democracy, including a commitment to:

  • An elected government

  • The rule of law

  • Equal rights for all before the law

  • Freedom of religion

  • Freedom of speech and association

  • The values of openness and tolerance
